This Easy ‘70s-Inspired Look Is the Ultimate Summer Trend

It seems as though 2022 is the year of the resurgence of different decades, especially when it comes to fashion. Of course, we know that ’90s and Y2K fashion are having a serious moment right now, but there’s no denying that ’70s-inspired looks are popping up more and more. From home decor to clothing, funky and fun colors, patterns, and textures (like knits and crochet) are making their way into mainstream style.

This summer is also all about easy-to-wear, comfortable, and effortless style—with Matilda Djerf-inspired “clean girl aesthetic,” everything linen, and Coastal Grandmother trends reigning supreme. The crochet trend falls right in line with that effortless cool-girl aesthetic. It’s unique yet still easy, breezy, and attainable.

What’s the crochet trend all about?

When you think of crochet, you might immediately think of your grandma’s favorite hobby. However, you can drop that thought from your mind because crochet is cool again. If you do a quick Google or Pinterest search for “’70s fashion,” it’s almost guaranteed that you’re going to find some crochet tops, pants, dresses, and accessories. ’70s style icons like Joni Mitchell and Cher were often photographed wearing crochet—and I can definitely say that I would love to wear some of those pieces today.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen crochet popping up in the runway shows and products of top designers. Prada’s crochet-style raffia tote bag has quickly become the it-girl bag of the summer, even with its hefty price tag. And we can’t forget about Harry Styles’ iconic patchwork cardigan, which inspired a whole TikTok trend. But don’t worry: Like most high-fashion trends, crochet has trickled down into mainstream fashion and become as attainable as ever (cue The Devil Wears Prada cerulean speech). Keep scrolling to shop our favorite crochet pieces.

How to wear crochet

This trend might seem intimidating, but the best part of it is that it can be done on a sliding scale. If you’re not down to go all-in on a funky and colorful ’70s pattern, you can start with a simple crochet top or swim cover-up in a gorgeous neutral hue. This trend lends itself to an overall effortless look—so a cute crochet top pairs perfectly with your favorite denim, and a fun crochet tote adds a unique touch to your linen beach outfit.

10 Pieces I’m Investing in Now That I’m Entering My 30s

Let’s be honest: 30 is the new 20, and I’m welcoming my new stage of life with open arms. While your 20s are about figuring out who you are, what you want to do, and who you want to surround yourself with, your 30s come with knowing who you are—and that includes knowing what your personal style is. Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays you either love (no pun intended) or hate. Me? I love it. It’s my favorite holiday.
